Marcel took a sip of his water as he studied the woman seated across the table from him. She was more than a capable investigator. He’d used her before in doing background checks, but more than that. He’d known her for years and trusted her. She didn’t seem too happy with his request to dig up info on Madison’s ex-wife, though.

“Why would you want to keep her from her kids?” she demanded.

“She abandoned them,” he answered coolly, “but your job isn’t to question me, Ms. Ritz. Yours is to refuse the case if you can’t handle it.”

She tilted her chin haughtily. “I can handle the case, asshole,” she snapped. “I was just wondering why you’d want to take someone’s kids. You’re rich. You can hire a surrogate.”

“Their father is my man,” he said patiently. “He loves his kids.”

“I hate this kind of thing,” she muttered. “Nasty custody battles.”

Marcel shrugged a shoulder. “I’ll get someone else,” he told her evenly. “I’m sure there are plenty of PIs in the city who won’t treat this as if they have a personal stake in it.”

“You have no idea what it’s like for kids being torn apart by warring parents,” she murmured, her expression tight. “Most of the time, the parents just do it to get at each other.”

“He has custody, Carla,” he said. “He’s had the kids since she walked out on them.”

Anger filled her eyes then and she looked down at the piece of paper he’d given her. “Is this everything you know about him?”

“Use it to find out about her.”

“Won’t change the price of beans, though, if she’s here to get them back,” Carla muttered. “It’ll be a fight if she can afford to take him to court.”

“Find out if she can.” Not that it mattered. The lawyer he’d hired was one of the best in child custody cases. She would crush any other lawyer in court.

Ava was like he was. She played hard and she worked harder. Neither of them gave up anything they wanted without a fight.
